Product Focus

DuSable Farms and Fermes DuSable will focus on the value-added processing and marketing of two plants that grow abundantly in Grand’Anse province; breadfruit and moringa oleifera; specifically converting raw breadfruit into breadfruit flour and converting raw moringa oleifera seed-pods into moringa oil.

In 1787, William Bligh was appointed Captain of the HMS Bounty and instructed by the Royal Crown to transport over 1,000 breadfruit trees from Tahiti to the Caribbean to be used as a high-energy, nutritious food source for British slaves. Today the shackles are broken, but the breadfruit is still known locally as Veritab Souve Pep La - the Savior of the People.

The Moringa plant is native to Northern India, where it was first described around 2000 BC as a medicinal herb. It is also known as The Miracle Tree for its innumerable uses for nutrition and health. Today, Moringa is cultivated around the world, primarily in poorer regions with tropical climates where the many uses for Moringa are needed most—places like Ethiopia, Haiti, Ghana, Honduras, Indonesia and Uganda.
